Master Bedroom Progress

This room has actually been our office the past 3 yrs. When I came home from grad school we decided to switch the office and the bedroom.  It makes more sense for this master bedroom to be attached to the den/nursery.  Although we have no plans for a live human infant anytime soon, it still makes more sense this way, especially if we are planning on putting the house on the market in the future.  The old bedroom turned office is actually the bigger of the two rooms, but our office furniture fits better in there, so this setup works well for us.

Here is the before:

And here is our progress:

This is what we have done so far:

  • Switched the bedroom and office
  • Painted the walls Pittsburg Paints Ultra in ‘Graphic Blue’ (Menards)
  • Installed faux wood blinds in dark walnut (Menards)
  • New bedding (Herbergers) –got on clearance during Black Friday last year for 75% off but it was sitting in my closet for the past 6mths.

The bed and frame were gifts from Adrian’s mother when she downsized from a queen to a full sized bed.  This room would probably do better with a full sized bed, but I enjoy the extra room as my husband would probably attest too.

I went with a really rich shade of blue that lies somewhere between baby blue and navy.  I immediately narrowed my chips down to this color and one other, and in the end I had to go with the ‘Graphic Blue’.   I was worried at first that it was too dark, but I think it compliments the light colored bedding, trim, and carpet nicely.

The chest of drawers are from Ikea that we got about 3 years ago. I don’t love them, but they serve their purpose. One day I would love to replace with some functional antique piece, or at least something solid wood. The stuff from Ikea is light, which is nice of moving and assembling, but its not the sturdiest.  Also, the laminate finish scratches very easily. I have seen people paint this stuff on other blogs which would be a good fix to cover badly scratched Ikea furniture.

The lamp and shade was also a gift from Adrian’s mother.

The blinds, from Menards, are faux walnut.  They are stock blinds, but they do custom cut them to any width you need to make them fit perfectly.  These can be installed as an inside mount or outside mount.  I am sure there is a time and a place of an outside mounted blind, but I have never understood it.  I think these look much nicer as an inside mount.  These are black out–which is great for a bedroom.

The closet in the master bedroom pretty large, but not overly big.  It is open to the room as you can see, so you have to keep it tidy for it to look nice. Adrian uses this closet because he actually have way more clothes than I do.  I wish we had a nice organization system in here, but I really don’t want to pay for it.  The   one hanging shelf thing really isn’t cutting it.  I did put some shelves behind the hanging clothes that you really can’t see in these photos.  The closets are pretty deep.

I love this chair.  Got it when some friends moved up to Alaska and had to clear house.  It’s not old, but does have a traditional feel.  I don’t really have a place for it right now, so its currently in Adrian’s closet where it can still be part of the room.

I am still deciding what to do with that big blank wall.  A wall of antique framed mirrors might be cool, but I am not sure that it would feng shui.  Maybe some framed art? Wedding photos? I am reluctant to put up photos of ourselves because it is not supposed to be good for resale to have family photos all over the house.  I could always take them down, but then I would have to come up with something to do with it later. What do you think?

Beautiful! I love the color and the bedding. What a difference.

We kept a wedding photo over our bed. It’s reminds me every day of what’s important in life. It was easy to take down when we were selling the house.

Indeediles. Perhaps, but I shall need a plan for replacement when house selling time comes. I was even thinking something simple like framed scrapbook paper in matching colors and patterns. Then I could just slip those into the frames in front of the photos for the time being. Thoughs?

That’s perfect! We put a tiny hole in the wall for the wedding picture. When we took it down you couldn’t even see the nail hole.

I have framed scrapbook paper above my bed right now just as something temporary because we couldn’t stand it being blank but I think it looks fine. You reeeeaaaalllly need to get on Pinterest……you will get soooo many sweet ideas plus tutorials about how to do everything.

I just got approved for one, but I haven’t set it up yet. I have been putting it off because I am afraid that I will spend too much time on at and I won’t actually get anything done. Ape- yes, i could just take it down but I want to actually have something up when we sell so it is not a wall of nothing and it looks more styled.

  4. […] we have had several people ask us why we placed the bed up against the window in the master bedroom.  I guess my poor photograhpy skills are to blame for that […]

  5. […] The simple shelves i put up over the windows add some much needed storage space and they look nice too. The binds are faux wood in white. More info on those here.  They truly are black out which is nice.  There will be some excellent naps taking place in this room! I did have some walnut colored faux wood blinds in here, but I decided I wanted a lighter feel in the room so I moved those to the master bedroom. […]

  6. […] Story of the master bedroom here. […]
