The List

We have several things that we want to get done around the house. It seems like “The List” is forever getting longer and longer. However, given that we don’t plan to stay here forever it doesn’t make too much sense to throw at bunch of money at this house, particularly if we can’t get all of that back when we sell.  We are focusing on projects that are necessary, such as the falling over retaining wall and the leaking nonfunctioning chimney, but also cost effective cosmetic projects that are cheap but improve the look of the house such as painting and trim work.

Things we have done so far:

  • Replaced old, faded, and damaged aluminum siding with vinyl siding
  • Tore up the builder’s grade carpet on the 1st floor
  • Tore up 3 layers of flooring in the kitchen to get down to the original hardwood
  • Refinished hardwood floors in the dining room, living room, and kitchen
  • A minor kitchen remodel
  • Installed quite a bit of trim in the kitchen and dining room
  • Upgraded the entertainment setup in the living room including running tv/speaker/computer wires through the walls and into a nearby closet
  • Minor 1/2 bathroom remodel
  • Upgraded of the window coverings (mini blinds make me gag)
  • Upgraded several light fixtures
  • Painted just about every room in the house
  • Removed crumbing retaining wall on the south side of the house and regraded the slope with fresh black dirt, grass seed and flowers
  • Decreased the size of some of the flower beds in the backyard and created a walking path out of old lime stone that was already on the property.
  • Trimmed the over grown lilac bushes
  • Cut down several unhealthy or damaged trees

Things we are working on right now:

  • The front yard retaining wall
  • Hand rails
  • Reorganizing the bedrooms/office
  • Completing the 3rd bedroom remodel including painting, tearing up the carpet, and refinishing the floors

Next on the agenda:

  • Painting the garage
  • Transplanting more flowers to the south side of the house
  • Removing the old chimney from the house

Projects on the back burner:

  • Big ass backyard deck
  • Privacy fence
  • Gutters
  • Strip and stain the front door
  • Paint the front porch interior
  • Paint the side entry door
  • Replace the storm doors
  • Trimming out the builtin in the dining room and finishing the molding
  • Upgrading the ceiling fan/light fixture in the dining room
  • Remodeling the full bath
  • re-pointing the limestone foundation

This list will change a least 12 times in the next week but I plan to keep it updated as we continue to make progress on the house and when we change our minds about what we plan to do.
